Description:

Developed in the early 1890s, the Borchardt Pistol represents a critical developmental step for the semi-automatic pistol as a whole, while also being the direct forerunner of the world famous Luger pistol. While Luger would make many refinements, Borchardt's design firmly established the core operating principles, including the critical toggle-link breech locking system and the sear assembly layout; many of the Borchardt's features would be right at home on a 1900 Luger, with the integral stock mounting lug excluded from early Lugers and re-introduced for 1908. Blade front and V-notch rear sights, "WAFFENFABRIK/LOEWE/BERLIN." atop the chamber, "D.R.P./No 75837." on the front toggle link, and "SYSTEM BORCHARDT PATENT" on the right side of the receiver. Imperial German "crown/(letter)" proofs are present on multiple parts. A "172.28" diameter marking is on the barrel, and the matching number "799" on the underside of the barrel, butt, trigger, rear toggle link and stock lug, as well as on the wood base of the nickel finished magazine and on the interior of the finely checkered grips. Overall finish is a fine blue, with a straw colored sear assembly and niter blue on the trigger, sear spring, plates and screws.

Rating Definition:

Fine as refinished, with 95% plus blue overall, showing a bit of spotting and light handling marks. Bright color is present on both the straw and niter blue components, fading slightly on the sear and magazine catch springs. The grips are very good, with some mild dings and generally sharp checkering. Mechanically very good. A fine example of a critical step in world handgun development.
