Description:

This Luftwaffe M30 Drilling was manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Sons in 1941. The M30 Drillings were commercial guns acquired by the Luftwaffe as survival weapons for aircrew assigned to operations in North Africa and the Middle East. Hermann Goering, the chief of the Luftwaffe, was an avid hunter and provided the best possible equipment to his aircrews. The M30 Drilling is possibly the highest quality firearm issued to any combatants during WWII. The drilling has a commercial grade blue finish on the barrels. The receiver, trigger guard and buttcap are casehardened with vivid case colors. The stock and forearm are European walnut with fine checkered panels. The stock has a rounded cheekpiece, black plastic buttplate embossed with the Sauer monogram and steel grip cap. Sling swivels are fitted the under barrel and stock. The 12-gauge shotgun barrels have a raised rib with a steel front sight with nickel-silver bead and a folding rifle rear sight which is raised when the barrel selector is moved to the rifle barrel. The drilling has double triggers for the shotgun barrels and a single set-trigger for the rifle barrel. The receiver, tang, trigger guard and buttcap are decorated with restrained and impeccably executed scroll engraving. The Sauer double S monogram is engraved on the underside of the receiver. The serial number is located on the bottom of the rifle barrel and on the left receiver rail. There is a Luftwaffe eagle marked on the right rear shotgun barrel. The inside of the forearm is stamped with the partial serial number "784". A "Stick eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, and an "eagle/N" commercial proofmarks stamped on the bottom of both shotgun barrels, the left side of the rifle barrel and on the top of the right receiver rail. The rifle barrel caliber "9.3 x 74. R." is engraved in an oval panel on the sighting rib and stamped on the lower left side of the rifle chamber. The shotgun gauge "12/65" is stamped on the underside of both shotgun barrels. "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL" with bullets on either end is stamped on the top of both shotgun barrels and on the left side of the rifle barrel. The legend "J.P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL" is roll-stamped on the breech of both shotgun barrels and on both sides of the receiver. The drilling is complete with the original field-gray painted aluminum Luftwaffe storage case. The case interior has wooden partitions covered with felt padding and a list of the contents is stenciled on the inside of the lid. Included with the drilling is a three piece wooden shotgun cleaning rod with a bore brush attached and an original leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 70% of the original blue and color casehardened finishes remaining overall. The markings are clear and sharp on the metal parts. The stock and forend are very fine with a nice matching medium brown color overall showing only minor handling marks on the sides with a very clear and sharp Luftwaffe Eagle stamp on the right side of the buttstock. The aluminum storage case retains more than half of its field gray painted exterior finish showing paint loss on the edges, corners and flat areas with a slight heavier dent on the right side end. A very fine example of a scarce and desirable Luftwaffe M30 survival drilling.
