Description:

This is a very fine example of a WWII K98 sniper rifle that was manufactured by the Gustloff factory in 1944. The top of the receiver ring is stamped "bcd/4," the wartime code for Gustloff-Werke and year of manufacture. It has the standard late pattern K98 bolt with the large oval gas ports on the underside, with the top of the bolt handle stamped "4558/x". The bolt is fitted with a late production milled safety and numbered cocking assembly. The barrel is fitted with the inverted "v" front sight and a standard K98 tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. The rear portion of the barrel is stamped with rifle serial number "4558x" and a single "eagle" firing proof, with a partial visible barrel maker's code next to the edge of the stock. It is fitted with a set of stamped, blued barrel bands, both stamped with only the serial number "45 58". It has a milled floor plate that is numbered "4558", and the trigger guard is only stamped with a single "byf" and "eagle/135" proof. It is fitted with the wartime laminated stock and handguard with no visible proof marks or serial number. The stock is fitted with a checkered steel buttplate. The receiver is fitted with the standard base with three main screws and three locks screws, unfortunately the heads has been slightly buggered. It is fitted with the later pattern blued long side rail type scope mount with the stamped, steel spring band rings and not the machined rings. The mount is numbered "4558/x" on the side with a small partial "eagle/359" Waffenamt proof in the middle. The mount is fitted with an early "dow" sniper scope that has the center elevation adjustment ring in the middle of the scope tube with the top, rear of the tube marked "dow +" with serial number "2455" on the rear underside of the tube. The scope is fitted with a rubber eyepiece. The rifle comes with front sight cover; however it is missing the cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% plus of the original blue finish overall, edge and high spot wear, the face of the floorplate and trigger guard having browned out, thinning on the barrel bands and center section of the bolt, and the top front exposed section of the barrel having a large scratched area. The stock and handguard have both been lightly sanded, retained and maybe tru-oiled as the exterior shows no visible proof marks. There is also a large age crack/separate of the laminations that has started directly behind the rear tang that extends all the way back to the heal of the buttplate. The scope and mount retain 90% plus of their blued finish overall with thinning on the front and rear ends of the scope with the ocular end has a slight dent on the left side. It did not damage the glass; however, it is clearly visible. The optics are clear, and the reticle is intact; however, one of the horizontal cross-hairs has lost some of its blackened material.
