Description:

Manufactured in 1868 among the earliest production of this model having the rare square top frame found on the first several hundred manufactured. This awesome S&W "tip-up" features a highly desirable and rare L.D. Nimschke signed panel scene engraving. Nimschke's masterful scrollwork is featured profusely on the sides of the frame. The scrollwork surrounds the vignette of a female bust (possible the goddess Diana or goddess of Liberty) in profile inside an oval panel on the left side of the frame, and this oval panel is signed with Nimschke's signature "N" initial. A similar oval panel bust is featured in a collection of Nimschke's pulls as documented by R.L. Wilson in "L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver" on pages 60 and 79. The scrollwork extends to the cylinder flats and barrel at the breech and muzzle. The sides of the barrel lug have fine entwining line and crosshatching engraved motifs. A star burst is engraved on the underside of the frame. The area behind the hammer features a fan/leaf motif. The back strap has a scallop border and rope motif surrounding the serial number. Engraved flourishes surround the one-line address/patent dates on the rib. The revolver has a gold plating over a silver backing. Both grip panels are numbered to the gun, and the left grip panel features a monogram. Matching assembly marks are found on the grip frame, cylinder and barrel. Comes with a period hardwood case containing a cartridge block holding 51 cartridges.

Rating Definition:

Outstanding as embellished and signed by renowned Master Engraver L.D. Nimschke. All of the silver plating remains on the frame and barrel and most of the original gold plating remains on the cylinder and hammer with the balance a mixture of silver backing and smooth gray patina. The engraving is crisp. The grips are excellent showing minimal handling marks and fiery colors. Mechanically fine with cylinder stop needing minor adjustment. The case is fine showing some minor handling/storage marks and typical wear to the lining. It is not often that we catalog Nimschke signed engraved S&Ws. A truly one-of-a-kind rarity in S&W collecting that even the most advanced collections almost never see. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
