Description:

When collectors see Sharps rifles with heavy barrels we tend to assume they went West, but the letter lists this rifle as sold to an East Coast marksman. The included letter lists it as invoiced on November 12, 1874, to Henry Woodward of Middletown, Connecticut, as a "Model 1874 Sporting Octagon Rifle" in .44 caliber with a 30 inch octagon barrel, set triggers, globe and peep sights, and oil finished wood. The price and weight were not listed. The Woodwards were a prominent family in Middletown. Henry Woodward (1838-1907) is listed as a prominent druggist, bank executive, 33rd degree Mason, and leading citizen in Middletown. His obituary also noted he was a "crack shot" and sportsman, and other articles indicate he was a member of the Connecticut Rifle Association. The matching numbered heavy barrel has a blade front sight, Lawrence patent rear sight, the Bridgeport address, and "CALIBRE 44" at the breech. The forearm is also numbered to the gun and has a spire pattern pewter cap. The action is equipped with adjustable double set triggers and is marked with the patent marking on the left and the serial number on the upper tang. The buttstock is smooth and has a standard sporting buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mostly mottled brown patina throughout along with some areas of cold blue and brown, minor oxidation and pitting, and general mild wear. The wood is fair with some chipping and slivers absent from the edges, repaired break in the wrist, and general minor scrapes and dings. Mechanically excellent.
