Description:

The letter indicates this rifle was invoiced on May 27, 1876, to J.P. Lovell & Sons who were Sharps' agents in Boston and that the rifle is listed as a "Model 1874 Mid-Range rifle #1. The calibre was 40[,] and it had a 28 inch barrel. The list price was $73.00." 30 inch barrels were standard on this model, and only 102 were manufactured. The rifle has a windgauge globe front sight with a spirit level, the Hartford barrel address followed by the Lawrence patent rear sight, "CALIBRE 40" on top at the breech, "70" on the right side at the breech, the 1869 patent marking on the left side of the frame, a textured single trigger, mid-range peep sight, checkered forearm and pistol grip stock, no cheek rest, and a nickel plated buttplate. The forearm, barrel, and upper tang have matching partial or full serial numbers. The digits on the upper tang are offset to accommodate the peep sight screws.

Rating Definition:

Fine with trace patches of original blue finish mixed with smooth brown patina along the barrel, 30% plus original case colors, 95% plus of the nickel on the buttplate, changed peep sight, minor oxidation, and general mild wear. The buttstock is fine with distinct checkering, some minor flakes and edge wear. The forearm is refinished with faint hairline cracks, a well-executed repair on the right side front, and general light scratches and pressure marks. Mechanically excellent.
