Description:

The front of the bowl is inscribed "CHICAMAUGA [sic]/PRSNT/BY/CAPT. P. HAND/TO/LT. COL. GE. [shield] BRIAND." Peter Hand of Company K the 24th Illinois Volunteer Infantry (raised out of state) was promoted to captain on November 24, 1862. The 24th was composed mainly of immigrants from Europe who came over following the failed 1848 revolutions. The unit fought at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19-21, 1863, in the Army of the Cumberland. When the pipe was presented is not listed. It may have been post-war. Lieutenant Colonel Briand's identity is more complex as no relevant man by that name has been identified. However, given Chickamauga is spelled wrong, it is certainly possible the surname is as well or that it is an alternate spelling of another related surname such as Brand/Briant/Bryant. For example, Captain Hand's name is also listed as Handt in some records. The consignor has included information on Private George Brand of the 24th, but he was not a lieutenant colonel and was already discharged prior to Chickamauga. One possible though probably unlikely recipient could be Lieutenant Colonel George W. Brent, Assistant Adjutant General Army of Tennessee, a member of General Braxton Bragg's staff. Bragg's Army of the Tennessee faced off against the 24th Illinois and the Army of the Cumberland at Chickamauga and won, though the Confederate losses were higher. The battle resulted in the second-highest number of casualties after only Gettysburg. Captain Hand went on to run Peter Hand Brewery Company in Chicago.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with one minor repair on the edge and general light wear. Provenance: World class carved pipe collection of Norm Flayderman
