Description:

Produced without identifying markings, bayonets in this style are often associated with "Turner" units in the Union Army; drawing heavily from the German-American community, especially gymnastics clubs ("Turnverein"), volunteers in the Turner units are known to have used heavy barreled target and sporting guns, often with sling swivels and a long one-piece bayonet lug to facilitate marching and close combat. Measuring 19 inches overall, with a 14 inch clip point blade and a cast brass hilt with integral guard, ribbed grip, dovetailed lug slot and a blued steel lug catch. The word "Bahnfrei" (Clear the Path) is cast into the right side of the grip; this motto is associated with the Turners, and was known to be on the guide flags of the 20th New York Volunteer Infantry.

Rating Definition:

Good overall, the blade shows a dark patina, with mild pitting, light handling marks, and signs of sharpening/reshaping of the blade; it may have been a longer, yataghan profile blade taken down to a bowie-style profile. The hilt shows a mixed aged patina, with signs of light cleaning and a few handling marks. The lug catch retains good tension. A fine vintage bayonet.
