Description:

These carbines were designed by Major General Ambrose Burnside, who is most famous for his failures as a military leader during the Civil War and for his facial hair. Unfortunately for Burnside, he sold his shares in the Bristol Firearms Co./Burnside Rifle Co. before the outbreak of the war and the company received large government contracts for these carbines. Approximately 43,000 of these "Model of 1864" Fifth Model carbines with the distinctive guide screw at the center of the frame were manufactured circa 1863-1865, and this example shows the standard markings and features.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 75% of the bright original niter blue finish on the breechblock and lever, 40% plus original case colors, 30% of the fading original blue on the barrel, some patches of pitting and oxidation, and mostly smooth gray and brown patina on the balance. The wood is very fine with crisp cartouches and has some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
