Manufactured in 1865-1866 under contract with the Ordnance Department with standard Spencer markings and features. This carbine subsequently was in Germany in the 1890s based on the "crown/V" proofmark marked on guns in stock when the 1891 proof law came into effect as well as "131" stamped on the left side of the butt. It was probably among the thousands of Spencers among the surplus arms sold to the French during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 and was later captured and/or sold in Germany.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with 30% original blue and casehardened finish, mottled gray and brown patina, some minor pitting, and general mild wear. The wood is fine and has a few dents, numerous scattered small scrapes and dings, and general minor wear. Mechanically fine.
