Description:

These carbines were designed by Major General Ambrose Burnside, who is most famously known for is questionable leadership at Fredericksburg, Antietam, and Petersburg. He had sold his shares in the Bristol Firearms Co./Burnside Rifle Co. before it received the large government contracts for these carbines, leading to very little personal profit from his invention. Approximately 43,000 of these carbines were manufactured circa 1863-1865, and this example shows the standard markings and features, including an illegible cartouche on the left of the stock.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall, retains 60% blue finish and strong case color patterns with the balance a smooth grey patina. The wood is also fine and shows some minor chipping in some of the edges, minor dings and scratches throughout, and a fine cartouche on the wrist. Mechanically excellent.
