Description:

The Joslyn rifle was the first breech loading metallic cartridge rifle manufactured at a U.S. national armory. 3,007 were assembled in January to June of 1865 utilizing breech units supplied by the Joslyn Firearms Company. 1,600 were later converted for the .50-70 Government cartridge and reassembled with little regard to matching numbers and sold to the French during the Franco-Prussian War, making this original rimfire example fairly scarce. It has standard Civil War era rifle-musket sights, "M/2846" on top of the breechblock, "M/2846" on the upper tang, "1864" and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" on the lock, and a removable collection mark on the trigger guard. Includes a "US" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, showing mostly bright on the barrel and 40% plus original case colors with the balance a brown-grey patina. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is also very fine with minimal minor handling marks, some light chipping along the cleaning rod channel, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is very good showing a mixture of bright and grey patina.
