Description:

One of 200 Model 1842 pistols with rifled bores delivered to the U.S. Navy by Henry Derringer. These pistols hold a significant place in the history of U.S. martial pistols as they are the first standard military pistols with rifled barrels. Deringer is probably best known for his work with pocket pistols, however he was no stranger to government contracts. Approximately 1,200 Model 1842 pistols were manufactured by Deringer in total, with only 300 believed to have been accepted by the Navy. This example shows standard markings and features including the "US/DERINGER/PHILADELA" marked lock.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 60% of the original brown finish on the barrel thinning to a grey patina on the balance, brightly polished brass, and a grey-brown patina on the lock, all under a layer of protective varnish. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is very good with minimal scattered minor handling marks and a couple hairline cracks near the butt. Mechanically excellent.
