Description:

The Long Land Pattern was the main musket used by the British and their colonial counterparts during the French & Indian War and remained widely used during the American Revolution. This one appears to have been built during the former and is marked with what looks like "VERNON/1762" on the tail of the lock and has the Georgian cipher at the center. The barrel has a bayonet stud near the muzzle and government markings near the breech. The furniture is all brass. The thumb plate is marked "62/3/3." The mark may be for the 62nd Regiment of Foot. They received new 1768 Short Land Pattern musket in 1776 from Dublin Castle because their earlier arms had been "so abus'd to keep them bright, that there is not the least appearance of the Kings mark." They surrendered their arms after the British loss at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. The stock is carved with "JA" on the right side of the butt and also has a smaller "M" or "W" on both sides. A collection marking is on the trigger guard bow. The socket bayonet is marked "JOHN GILL" on the blade (London, 1806-1809).

Rating Definition:

Fair with dark patina and moderate pitting on the lock and barrel along with somewhat obscured markings, aged patina on the furniture, cracked trigger guard tang, some chips and slivers absent from the refinished and repaired stock, a few minor cracks, and general moderate wear. Mechanically fine. The bayonet is good and has lighter patina and oxidation.
