Description:

Measuring 37 1/2 inches overall, with a 32 3/4 inch curved single fuller blade, finished in niter blue over most of the length, gold washed near the guard, with gold accented wire etched decoration. The blade decoration is chiefly of patriotic and martial themes, with scroll accents and an American Eagle with 15 stars on the shield (suggesting either an artistic variation or a timeframe of 1792-1796). The gilt brass hilt is decorated with attractive sculpted leaf and scroll designs on the languet and guard, with a fine "screaming eagle" pommel and a ribbed bone grip. The scabbard is of black leather construction, with light engraving and gold wash on the throat and tip. Notes supplied by the consignor attribute the sword to a Lieutenant John Hubbell of the Connecticut Militia, noting him as Lieutenant of "the second troop of horses in the fourth regiment in this colony" (the 4th Connecticut Regiment was raised in April of 1775, and participated in the Invasion of Canada, and the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth), and also places him "on the Hudson Oct. 5-30th 1777, during the "Burgoyne Alarm"". In historical context the "Burgoyne Alarm" appears to be the Saratoga Campaign, in which British forces under General John Burgoyne set out from Quebec and into New York to seize control of the Hudson River Valley. Burgoyne failed in his objective, and was unable to make good a retreat, resulting in his surrender to General Horatio Gates on October 17th. This represented a major victory for the Continental Army, both in a direct military sense and in the effect it had on foreign assistance, as France formally allied with the Americans in the aftermath of the victory. Also included is a piece of vintage paperwork, which is described as a "passport" made out to Lieutenant Hubbell for safe passage to "Greenvil" (likely Greeneville, Connecticut) to resolve private business.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with over half of the niter blue, strong gold washing and clear etching. 70% of the gilt finish is present on the hilt and the scabbard fittings, and the scabbard is rough, torn through the center and showing a number of cracks and scuffs. The sword shows evidence of having suffered serious damage at some point in the period of use, with the blade having been snapped roughly 2/3rds of the way up and then pinned and welded back in place, and bending and cracking of the hilt.
