Description:

Only a total of around 2,000 Model 1814 rifles were manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut, in 1814-1817. Henry Deringer of "Philadelphia Deringer" fame manufactured a similar amount. These rifles were the predecessors of the more numerous Model 1817 "Common Rifles" manufactured from 1817 into the 1840s. The first Model 1814s were manufactured during the War of 1812 and were likely rushed to riflemen. The Model 1814 can be quickly identified by its shorter and part octagon barrel as well as the smaller "stud" style retainers for the rear barrel bands. It has a dovetailed brass blade front sight, dovetailed notch rear sight, "US" and "P" on the upper left flat at the breech, an unclear marking on top, "U.S./R. JOHNSON" at the center of the lock, browned iron furniture, and nearly full-length stock with shallow cheek rest and a "JJB" stamp on the bottom by the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Fair as converted to smoothbore and reconverted to flintlock configuration with dark brown patina overall, moderate oxidation, some tool marks, chip at the breech, minor tension crack in the left flat, general scratches and dings, and reoiled finish on the lightly sanded wood. It will fire from half-cock, but is otherwise mechanically fine.
