Manufactured in 1907, this deluxe Model 1894 has several rare and desirable special order features and is pictured and identified in George Madis' "The Winchester Book" on page 414. The special order matted barrel lacks provision for a rear sight, is fitted with a pinned beaded blade front sight, and has the two-line Winchester address/patent dates marking and a Winchester factory oval proof stamped between the two-line nickel steel and caliber markings correctly stamped on the left side of the barrel to accommodated the factory matting. The barrel matting is the later wavy lines style. According to Madis, "Matted barrels were produced in very limited numbers." According to the ARMAX Book research published on Model 1894s, only 3 letter-able matted barrel carbines are known. The receiver is fitted with a Lyman peep sight and a saddle ring staple (saddle ring absent) on the left side. A second Winchester factory oval proof is stamped on top of the receiver. The upper tang is marked with the three-line model/trade mark information. The nicely figured walnut forearm and straight grip stock are checkered. The left side of the lower tang is stamped "5944 X." The assembly number "1259" is stamped on the buttstock under the carbine buttplate.

Very fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 85% plus original blue finish and the receiver and bolt retain 60% original blue finish with a smooth brown-gray patina on the balance. Traces of original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The buttplate is mostly a smooth dark brown patina. The wood is fine with minor dings and scratches and some wear in the checkering. Mechanically excellent. A rare special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 with highly desirable and rarer matted barrel that is missing from even the most advanced Winchester collections.
