Description:

The Model 1840 was the last flintlock musket manufactured by the Springfield Armory, and 26,841 of the 30,421 were converted to percussion between in 1849-1851, and more converted after, making examples in original flintlock configuration exceedingly rare. Various parts inside the lock are marked with single digit and letter markings. It has standard markings and features throughout, including "1842" on the lock, "1843" on the barrel tang and a faint "AH" (Asabel Hubbard) cartouche on the left flat. Removable collection mark on the trigger guard. Includes a "US" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very good as reconverted to flintlock configuration, showing mostly bright finish with evidence of cleaning, some scattered grey patina, light pitting, and some minor flash pitting on the right near the breech. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood has some scattered minor dings and chips and a faint cartouche. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet it very good showing mostly bright with some patches of grey patina.
