Description:

The snaphance (snaphaunce) was invented around 1550 and remained in use in Northern Italy long after it had been replaced elsewhere primarily with the "true" flintlock. This gun is likely by Negroni from the 1760s-1770s in Brento, Italy. The same exact lock pattern as well as others with minor differences was used on multiple guns attributed to Negroni, several of which have "Brento" markings on the locks and one of which is also dated "1763." The only marking on this example is "Brento" between the frizzen and the pan, and the lock also has raised relief scrollwork and grotesque patterns. The separate flash pan cover automatically opens when the gun is fired. The barrel has a silver blade front sight with ornate base, an interesting silver "folded leaf" style rear sight, and an engraved Roman soldier motif at the breech. The furniture is all iron and also features a variety of grotesque patterns such as a pair of harpies on the pierced side plate. The full length stock is likewise carved en suite with raised relief scrollwork with some grotesque accents. Sling swivels are fitted to the left side of the stock.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with fairly bright metal surfaces throughout, some light patina and pitting, generally distinct designs throughout, crisp carving, a chip at the nose of the lock, small dings and pressure marks, cracking at the forend tip, minor repairs at the toe, mild edge wear, and some light scratches. Mechanically fine. Overall, this is a very attractive and artistic Italian piece.
