The barrels are signed "F. SMART" on top of the breech sections, and the locks are signed "F/Smart" at their centers. Francis Smart started his apprenticeship in 1686 and was active until at least 1725 (see p. 180 of "Gunmakers of London, 1350-1850" by Blackmore). The barrels also have Smart's maker's mark over London proof and view marks on the left at the breech, girdled transition points and breeches, flourishes of scroll engraving, and rear sight grooves at the breeches. The bridleless locks have double line borders, "H" marks on the interior, and scrollwork on the cocks and tails. The furniture is all brass and decorated with scrollwork and grotesque masks. The wrist escutcheons have monograms that appear to be "CLANE" or "CLAVE." The stocks have raised flats, molding lines, and some raised relief floral patterns.

Rating Definition:

Good as shortened with light gray patina on the lock and barrel, a few patches of mild pitting, aged patina on the brass, some gaps around the furniture, a few cracks in the stock (primarily in the pommel section), some chips at the edges, distinct carving and engraving, legible markings, and mild overall wear. Mechanically fine.
