Dating to circa 1685-1690, the barrels and locks are each signed "T. WALLIS." The three-stage barrel also has "crown/TW" and London proof and view marks at the breech on the left, girdled transitions, and light engraving. The scrolling, pierced side plates have light engraving, and the "banana" profile lock and other iron furniture display scroll patterns of "strawberry" foliage along with some bird motifs. The stocks have artificial fiddleback figuring along their lengths, raised carving around the ramrod entry pipe and trigger guard finial mortises with spires, and distinct and tightly cut flats around the locks and side plates. Retaining its original iron-capped ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Fine with gray patina mixed with mild pitting and some staining. The pommel cap has some flaws around the screw. The markings and engraving mostly remain distinct. The partially restored stock is fair and has some repaired cracks and filler, several small chips and slivers absent from the edges, a few minor hairline cracks, minor dings and scratches, and attractive patterns. Mechanically fine.

Description:

See "A." The maker is almost certainly Thomas Wallis who is recorded as being refused admittance to the Gunmaker's Company between 1670 and 1674. He was appointed gunsmith to Sir John Talbot's Regiment of Dragoons in 1678 and made free of the Gunmaker's Company by redemption in 1681. He is noted as being established as a gunmaker in the parish of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in 1683 and died in 1696.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The metal has mostly gray patina and mild pitting. The markings and engraving are generally distinct. The partially restored stock is fair and has some small chips, the usual dings and scratches, a fair amount of lighter toned filler, and attractive patterns. The ramrod is a recut replacement. Mechanically fine.
