Description:

The Kuchenreuter family of Regensburg were among the finest of the Germanic gunsmiths in the 18th and 19th centuries. Johann Adam Kuchenreuter was active until 1869 and was court gunmaker for both the Princely House of Thurn & Taxis and the King of Bavaria. The barrel was crafted from tightly twisted Damascus steel and has a dovetailed blade front sight with long base, notch rear sight near the mid-point, and silver scrollwork flanking the Kuchenreuter maker's mark and golden "J. Adam Kuchenreuter in Regensburg." marking. It is equipped with double set triggers and has a folding peep sight and silver escutcheon with "MF" monogram on the upper tang. The breech and furniture primarily feature intricate scrollwork. The lock also has a pair of deer in a mountain scene and a rotating safety. The spurred trigger guard has another deer in a detailed scene. The stock has a horn forend cap, scrolled grip extension, scroll and fleurs-de-lis style borders on the checkering on the wrist, scroll carved patch box lid, large cheek rest, and incised scrollwork on the left side of the butt. The rifle is set within a hardwood case closely fitted to the gun, lined in purple (typically associated with the aristocracy), and containing a compliment of loading and maintenance accessories.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with mostly smooth silver-gray patina throughout, dark aged patina on the silver accents, bright golden maker's address, crisp engraving, absent middle ramrod pipe, and generally mild wear. The stock is fine and has fairly crisp checkering, a crack and repair in the left flat at the breech, some filler at the toe, crisp carving, and minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The case lid is absent, but it is otherwise fine and has sun faded lining, brighter purple in covered areas, area of replaced fabric at the breech end of the barrel, and mild storage wear. The accessories are very good, and the metal remains mostly bright. Overall, this is a very attractive rifle by one of the finest continental European gunmakers of the 19th century.
