Description:

Manufactured c. 1830-1850. The barrel has grooves for apparently mounting a hood over the silver blade front sight, four leaf rear sight (three folding) graduated for 100, 150, 200, and 250 yards with platinum sight lines (absent from the second); "I. PURDEY No 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON" marked on top near the breech, and two platinum bands and a platinum plug on the breech. The matching serial number is on the bottom of the barrel, breech hook, and on the lower tang. The bottom of the barrel also has London proof and view marks flanking "JP." "+" over "JP" is marked on the stock inside the barrel hook slot. The lock is signed "PURDEY" and has scroll engraving and a sliding half-cock safety. It is fired by a non-adjustable single set trigger, and the furniture is engraved with engraving that coordinates with the scrollwork on the lock. The stock has a horn forend cap, silver barrel key escutcheons, checkered grasping areas, blank wrist escutcheon, and a shadow-line cheekpiece. Sling eyes are on the bottom of the butt and front ramrod pipe. It comes in a fitted hardwood case with a Purdey trade label inside the lid, green baize lining, and a compliment of loading and maintenance tools. The lid escutcheon is inscribed "SIR JOHN GERARD BART./NEW HALL." Sir John Gerard (1808-1854) was an English gentleman from an old Roman Catholic family, the 12th Baronet of New Hall from 1826 until his death, a lieutenant colonel in the local militia, and a major in the Lancashire Hussars when they reformed in 1848.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 70% plus of the refinished brown finish remaining on the barrel along with distinct Damascus twist patterns, mostly light gray patina on the balance, some minor pitting, light edge wear, aged patina on the silver, and generally light wear. The stock is good and has minor handling wear on the otherwise crisp checkering, and general minor scratches and pressure marks. Mechanically fine. The relined case is also very good with storage related wear, including cracks in the exterior, a section of the interior rim absent, and general dings and scratches. The accessories are very good and have mostly the expected age and storage related wear.
