Description:

Only an estimated 7,000 Colt First Model Dragoon revolvers were manufactured in 1848 to 1850. They are important to collectors of antique American revolvers in general and Colts in particular as one of Samuel Colt's large "holster pistols" descended from the famous Colt Walker. This example also has U.S. Ordnance Department markings and was very likely used by the U.S. Regiment of Mounted Riflemen or the 1st or 2nd U.S. Dragoons on the western frontier in the antebellum era. It has a German silver blade front sight, "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-" recut barrel address reading from the breech towards the muzzle on the top of the barrel, oval stops and the U.S.M.R. roll-scene on the cylinder, "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." on the left side of the frame, the square-back trigger guard, collector's inventory number on the trigger guard, and matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, loading lever, wedge, cylinder pin and cylinder.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 40% original blue finish with the barrel address having been professionally re-engraved with evidence of reblue in this area. Faint patterns of original case colors remain on the loading lever, hammer and frame, otherwise the revolver has a mix of brown and gray patinas and a few scattered patches of pitting. Nearly all of the cylinder scene remains. 20% original silver plating remains on the grip straps. The grip is also fine with high edge wear and minor dings. Mechanically excellent. Even with the aforementioned barrel address issue, this is still a well above average example of a highly desirable First Model Colt Dragoon!
