Description:

Offered here is one of only 1,126 Colt Model 1860 revolvers converted to the Richards system for the U.S. Ordnance Department. The trigger guard and barrel are stamped with Ainsworth's "A" marking. "US" is stamped on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the wedge. This particular revolver is marked with multiple original factory serial numbers as well as secondary "313" serial number from the time of the conversion. The barrel has the one-line New York address, the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT," and the cylinder has the Navy battle scene. The grip has barely legible cartouche on the left side. A collector's inventory number is on the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel retains 20% original blue finish in and around the protected areas and some patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer and frame, otherwise a mottled gray patina with some mild pitting. There is a dent at the muzzle. Nearly all of the cylinder scene remains. The grip is good with faint cartouche, high edge wear, chipping near the bottom, and a hairline crack near the top (right side). Mechanically excellent. These U.S. Richards Conversion saw hard use in the Indian Wars. Examples like this are very scarce!
