The Sharps Model 1874 was one of the best firearms of the late 19th century American West and was famously used by professional buffalo hunters, pioneers, and guides. This very fine rifle was manufactured around 1878 at the Bridgeport factory. It has a globe front sight, Lawrence patent rear sight, tang mounted mid-range peep sight, adjustable double set triggers, "Old Reliable" in a box followed by "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN." on top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight, "CALIBRE 40" on top at the breech, "50" upside down on the right flat, a small "X" on the left flat, "6" and "11/16" on the bottom of the barrel along with the matching serial number and "DD," Schnabel tip forearm with "8659" in pencil inside, serial number ahead of the peep sight, "SHARPS RIFLE CO/PAT APR 6 1869" on the left side of the action, smooth "shotgun" buttstock and checkered steel buttplate. The leather bound ammunition case has the seal of Massachusetts embossed on the top with a "W" emblem within, "PAT. MAR. 69." over a star on the top section of the lock, and an embossed "W" emblem with "J/J" in the middle and a "9" above on the bottom. Inside is a block for 56 cartridges and currently holding 33 cartridges (two bullets are out of their cases and stuck in the block).

Fine overall with 75% plus original blue finish on the barrel, 40% original case colors mixed with smooth brown patina on the action and other components, crisp markings, some patches of minor surface oxidation, glossy original varnish finish on the stock and forearm, some minor dings and scratches throughout, a few slight flakes at the edges, and a few dents/divots on the forearm. Mechanically excellent. The ammunition case is very good and has distinct markings, one torn strap, 2 1/2 inch tear in the lid hinge, and mild scratches and marks. Overall, this is a very attractive set that will make a great addition to any Sharps or antique American arms collection.
