This late production "Type III" U.S. Model 1795 Springfield Musket was manufactured 1812 and was probably rushed into service during the turmoil of the War of 1812. The lock plate is marked with the script "US" over the federal eagle and shield emblem above "SPRINGFIELD" (arched) at the center and "1812" behind the cock, and the inside is marked "CT." "O" is also marked on many of the sub-components of the lock. The buttplate is also dated "1812." The barrel has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle and "US" along with "P/eagle head/V" proofs at the breech. The blade front sight is on the rear of the upper barrel band. Earlier "Type I" sling swivels are mounted through studs on the middle band and trigger guard finial. "SP" is marked on the trigger plate. The stock has "US" in script on the left flat, "N [reversed] P" on the left side of the butt, and an attractive short fluted comb. The trigger guard has a collection marking. "IN US" is marked on the socket bayonet. Also includes a black leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration with dark brown patina mixed with applied artificial brown, mild oxidation/pitting, mostly distinct markings, unusual squared sides of the cock screw, minor dings and scratches, lightly sanded and re-oiled stock, minor crack at the rear lock screw, repairs around the lock mortise, and mild overall wear. The bayonet has gray patina and moderate pitting. Mechanically fine.
