Description:

One of 1,600 or less pistols manufactured by Joseph Henry of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1807-1808 for government contract. Contracts were recorded for 150 pairs in 1807 and 650 pairs in 1808, but the number of pistols actually delivered is unknown. The lock is marked "US" in front of the cock, "J.HENRY/PHILA" at the tail, and has a small "PS" on the inside with small parts marked "VII". It has a "three-leaf clover" shaped cartouche on the left flat with "V/TP" within it, likely an inspector mark for Thomas Palmer, along with an "X" below this mark. The barrel at the breech shows a deep "P" proof along with a faint unidentifiable mark. The pistol shows standard features and has a removable collection mark on the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration, showing a mix of artificial grey and brown patinas and an attractive antique patina on the brass with some scattered light pitting and evidence of light cleaning. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is good with a repair in the left near the rear pin, a few hairline cracks, minor handling marks throughout, and legible cartouches. No click at full cock but holds there and otherwise mechanically fine.
