Description:

Only 1,626 of these pistols were manufactured in 1813-1815 before the initial order of 20,000 was revised due to heavy recoil and the Model 1816 variant in .54 caliber was ordered. Of these, 626 were delivered to the U.S. Army like this example. This scarce model is particularly significant as it was the very first firearm ordered with interchangeable parts as part of the contract. Simeon North had already been working on milling machines and other industrial techniques to make interchangeable parts practical, and this model put the young United States ahead of its European counterparts in terms of arms manufacturing. The barrel is marked "H H P" above the vent and "P/U S" on the upper left flat at the breech and has been fitted with a small post front sight near the muzzle. The rounded lock has "S. NORTH/U [eagle motif] S/MIDLN CON." at the center and a removable brass pan without a fence. The stock has an oval "LS" cartouche on the left flat.

Rating Definition:

Very good as reconverted to flintlock configuration with applied dark patina throughout, some light pitting, cracked front barrel band, and distinct markings. The refinished stock is fair with chipping around the tail of the lock, a crack at the rear lock screw, and some cracking on the underside at the midsection. Mechanically fine. This is an important early U.S. martial model that is missing from many advanced collections.
