This is an example of one of the only 600 Type II Springfield Model 1817 U.S. martial pistols. The lock is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1818" behind the hammer and eagle over "US" ahead of the hammer. The barrel is dated "1818", and there is a recessed "P" and "eagle head/V" proofs marked on the left side breech end of the barrel. Brass blade front sight, iron mountings, wooden ramrod with swollen end and mounted with a full walnut stock with a faint "V/JN" cartouche on the left flat, an oval with a script "S", and a removable collection mark on the trigger guard. The Model 1817 pistol is the first of only three handguns ever manufactured by Springfield Armory which also include the Model 1855 pistol carbine and the U.S. Model 1911 .45 automatic.

Rating Definition:

Very good as reconverted back to flintlock configuration, showing mostly bright finish with some evidence of cleaning, some patches of light pitting, and mild flash pitting. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is fine with some minor dings and chipping and faint but clearly legible cartouches. Mechanically fine.
