Description:

One of an estimated 5,151 later production, iron mounted Model 1855 percussion rifles manufactured by Harpers Ferry for U.S. government contract from 1857-1861. The lock plate is dated "1860" and the barrel dated "1861", making it likely this rifle was either issued to Union forces early in the war or captured by Confederate forces during their raid on the Harpers Ferry Armory in April of 1861. Many examples of these rifles were lost during the raid when retreating Union forces attempted to burn the armory to keep it from falling into Confederate hands. The rifle shows standard markings and features including the three-leaf rear sight variation, with leaves marked "1", "3", and "5". The patch box contains an extra nipple and ball screw (fits the ramrod poorly). Includes an unmarked M1855 pattern sword bayonet with a leather sheath.

Rating Definition:

Very good, showing mostly bright finish with some evidence of mild cleaning and some scattered light patches of brown patina. The refinished wood is good with some minor dings and scratches, a few hairline crack around the lock plate and trigger plate and a repair in the bottom of the buttstock. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is fine with the blade showing mostly grey patina and attractive aged patina on the brass.
