A) Pennsylvania Marked U.S. Springfield Model 1816 Percussion Conversion Musket

Description:

Originally manufactured as a flintlock musket with "1816" dated lock and "1817" on the barrel tang, it was subsequently converted to percussion in the "Belgian" style. This musket bears a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania cartouche, and along with those like it would have been widely issued to volunteer infantry regiments early in the Civil War. It has standard markings and features, including a "CP" cartouche near the lower tang, "34" on the buttplate tang. Removable collection mark on the trigger guard. Includes a "US" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Good, showing mostly bright finish with some evidence of cleaning and some minor flash pitting. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood has minimal scattered handling marks and mostly clear cartouches. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is also very good showing a mix of bright and grey patina with some light pitting and cleaning.

Description:

This Model 1816 Springfield Musket has a bolster conversion performed by Hewes & Phillips of Newark, New Jersey, and features their distinctive percussion breech with integral "H&P" marked bolster, "1863" dated plug, and "1838" dated lock. It has standard markings and features along with "ABC" in front of the trigger guard, a faint cartouche on the left flat, and removable collection mark on the trigger guard. Includes a "US" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very good as restored, showing mostly bright finish on the barrel and mountings with some evidence of cleaning and traces of blue finish on the lock thinning to a grey patina. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is fine with minor handling marks, edge chipping, and a few hairline cracks. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is fine showing mostly a grey patina.
