Description:

These Model 1841 "Mississippi rifles" were the first contract rifles produced by the Whitney company after Eli Whitney Jr. took control of operations. Though this model was produced by the company for well over a decade, they never turned a profit for Whitney due to the high cost of machinery and tooling. The model saw its heaviest use in the Mexican-American War, but many like this 1853 dated (barrel tang and lock) example saw heavy use early in the Civil War, with large numbers being acquired by the Confederacy. This example shows standard markings and features as well as an added band near the muzzle featuring a lug for a saber bayonet. Includes an unmarked reproduction buffed leather sling as well as a patch worm, bullet screw, tool, and extra nipple in the patch box.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus, showing a mixture of original brown finish and mottled brown-grey patina and mostly bright lightly polished brass. The reoiled wood is very good with some scattered minor handling marks, some scattered minor chipping, and two faint cartouches. Mechanically excellent. The reproduction dry sling is fine with mild wear and some scattered verdigris.
