Description:

Only 477 of Officer's Model rifles were manufactured by the Springfield Armory between 1875 and 1885 to fulfill the request by U.S. Army officers for suitable sporting rifles for use in hunting and target shooting. Of those, only 125 are estimated to have been this first type built using Model 1873 actions. These are easily among the most desirable of all the rifles manufactured by the Springfield Armory considering they are higher quality than standard martial weapons and were specifically produced for military officers. They are not serial numbered. It is embellished with finely executed traditional acanthus scroll and floral engraving on the forend cap, barrel band, action, lock, trigger guard, and buttplate tang. The special shorter 26 inch barrel has a folding combination bead and globe front sight in place of the military front sight, a Model 1873 style rear sight graduated 50 to 4 on the base and 5-12 on the ladder, and "V/P/eagle head" markings near the breech. In addition, it features a "Sharps R" marked folding peep sight and a single set trigger, and the stock has checkering on the forend and wrist and a circled script "P" by the trigger guard tang. A hickory cleaning rod with brass tip is fitted below the barrel. A collection marking is on the trigger guard tang.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The engraving and markings remain crisp. The barrel retains 99% of the professionally restored blue finish and has minimal applied wear visible at the muzzle. The other components have mostly gray and brown patina and patches of subdued original case colors. There are patches of discoloration on the breechblock and some splashes of protective lacquer. The stock has crisp checkering, smooth finish, some slight scratches and marks, and distinct marking. The portions of the cleaning rod that have remained covered by the stock and ferrule are a natural blonde while the exposed surfaces are more of a golden tone. Mechanically excellent. This is a beautiful Model 1875 Officer's Model Springfield Trapdoor rifle that would enhance any collection of antique arms.
