This Model 1899 Krag Carbine was altered at Springfield Armory circa 1906-1915 to accept the M1905 or Krag Rifle Knife-Bayonet. The alterations consisted of: (1) muzzle turned down to accept the bayonet socket, (2) installation of a altered upper barrel band and (3) installation of a shortened M1898 rifle stock. The carbine is fitted with a M1896 Carbine rear sight and M1899 Sight Protector Handguard. The stock forend was professionally altered at Springfield Armory with a nearly undetectable filler block. The left side of the stock wrist has the Springfield Armory, block "J.F.C." in a rectangle final inspection stamp. The underside of the stock wrist is stamped with the encircled, script, "P" proof mark. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S./ MODEL 1899. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 230384" in two lines. The butt trap retains the three-piece, jointed cleaning rod, and an 1899 bayonet with sheath is included. A total of 2,588 carbines were altered by Springfield Armory to the constabulary configuration. Rock Island Arsenal altered an additional 783 carbines. Some 4,980 carbines modified by the Manila Arsenal in 1907 and 1908 were issued to Philippine Constabulary units. Original, arsenal modified, Constabulary Carbines are quite difficult to obtain.

Exceptionally fine. The carbine retains 85% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish. The casehardened receiver, side-plate and loading gate have a attractive mottled, blue gray finish. The blued components, including the butt plate show only light handling and storage wear. The "J.F.C. final inspection mark is crisp. The stock and handguard are in excellent condition with some minor storage wear. The stock and handguard have been lightly varnished but the finish does not detract form the overall appearance. This is one of the finest Model 1899 Krag Constabulary Carbines in existence today.
