Description:

One of an estimated 3,544 early production, iron mounted Model 1855 percussion rifles manufactured by Harpers Ferry for U.S. government contract from 1857-1861. The lock plate and barrel are dated "1859", making it likely this rifle was either issued to Union forces early in the war or captured by Confederate forces during their raid on the Harpers Ferry Armory in April of 1861. Many examples of this rifle were lost during the raid when retreating Union forces attempted to burn the armory to keep it from falling into Confederate hands. The rifle shows standard markings and features including early brass mountings, "56" on buttplate tang, and two faint cartouches. Removable collection mark on the trigger guard. Includes a "56/9" stamped (6 stamped over 9) M1855 pattern sword bayonet with a leather sheath.

Rating Definition:

Very good, showing mostly bright finish with an attractive antique patina on the brass with some scattered light pitting. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is also very good and has some scattered minor dings, a few hairline cracks, and faint cartouches. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is very good with a bright grey patina on the blade and attractive aged patina on the brass. The sheath is mostly intact with minimal wear.
