This rare rifle is one of 841 Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen rifles reported as reconfigured into .22 Gallery Practice rifles by Springfield. These are the only Krags manufactured at Springfield following the adoption of the Model 1903. The rifle has the distinctive altered receiver side showing the small hole for the ejector, and the correct .22 caliber barrel with off-set chamber and bolt with auxiliary extractor for the .22 Long cartridge. The receiver is marked "U.S./MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY, 476006" followed by "CAL./.22." It has the standard pinned blade front and replacement 1901pattern rear sights.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 70% original finish remains overall with some light muzzle wear, traces of surface spotting, most of the original bright nitre blue on the extractor, and mixed gray/blue patina on the receiver and magazine cover. The stock is fine as lightly sanded with a freshened oil finish, slightly shallow finger grooves, and a few small dings. No visible inspection marks remain. Mechanically very good.
