Description:

The Model 1896 Carbine saw extensive service with the regular U.S. Army cavalry regiments during the Spanish-American War and subsequent Philippine Insurrection. Survival rate of Model 1896 Carbines in original configuration with a high degree of finish is low. This carbine is in original, un-altered condition and retains the Model 1896 rear sight and long wrist stock with sling bar and ring. The left side of the receiver is marked: "U.S./MODEL 1896. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 69899" in two lines. The carbine has apparently been arsenal overhauled: the final inspection stamp on the left wrist is not visible, and the stock is stamped with two encircled, script, "P" proof marks behind the trigger guard. The receiver, loading gate cocking piece and safety have a subdued casehardened finish. The barrel, rear sight base, buttplate, barrel band, trigger guard are blued, and the extractor and rear sight elevation bar have a bright blue finish.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The carbine retains 40% of the faded arsenal refurbished blue on the action and barrel. Half of the original casehardened finish remains on the magazine box. The small parts all retain 60-80% original blue. The re-oiled stock and handguard are also fine showing minimal handling and storage wear. The edges of the grasping grooves are sharp. All markings are crisp. Mechanically excellent. A solid representative example of the highly desirable Cavalry Model 1896 Krag Carbine.
