Only an estimated 1,376 Trapdoor 20 gauge "forager" shotguns were manufactured in the early 1880s. They were designed for 20 gauge brass shotgun shells and were used by hunters and scouts primarily at western outposts in the late 19th century. Collection marking in white under varnish on the bottom of the trigger guard. It has the correct two-click tumbler, special extractor, "1873" dated lock plate, "1881" in italics on top of the Model 1879 style breechblock, carbine buttplate and trigger guard, faint cartouches on the stock.

Rating Definition:

Fair, retains half of the streaked dull blue refinish thinning to a grey-brown patina and some faint case color patterns on the breech block with the balance a smooth grey patina and some scattered patches of light pitting. The refinished wood is also fair with some scattered minor handling marks, a few repaired hairline cracks, and faint illegible restruck cartouches. The ejector is stuck, otherwise mechanically fine.
