Reportedly 341 Model 1870 carbine were made in 1871. Blade front and adjustable ladder and notch carbine rear sights, unmarked bright barrel, casehardened breech block marked "1870/eagle head/U.S." and "1864" dated Springfield Armory lock. Smooth walnut stock with saddle ring and faint (illegible) oval cartouche on the left side of the wrist, and "U.S." marked steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel and barrel band have been buffed bright with areas of dark spotting and damage visible near front sight where there is evidence of an attempt to remove the exterior dings. The breech block, lock, and receiver have a combination of 30% original dark oil quenched casehardened finish, and muted case colors with some spotting and dark patina. The lightly sanded and re-oiled stock is good with refreshed cartouche and scattered small dings on the balance. Mechanically excellent.
