A) U.S. Springfield Model 1870 Trapdoor Rifle with Bayonet

Description:

One of 11,533 manufactured by Springfield Armory from 1870-1873, with most of the production being rifles rather than carbines. This example shows standard markings and features with "1870" dated breech block, "1863" dated lock plate, and two faint cartouches on the left flat. Includes a "US" marked socket bayonet. Removable collection mark on the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Fine, showing mostly a bright finish with the breech block and lock a smooth mottled grey patina. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is good with a few minor handling marks and faint cartouches. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is very good showing mostly a grey patina.

Description:

One of 3,422 manufactured in 1869-1876. Manufactured using a Civil War "1864" dated Springfield lock with the breech block dated 1870. It shows standard markings and features including the serial number on the barrel and receiver, and a faint cartouche on the left flat. Removable collection mark on the trigger guard. Includes a "US" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very good as restored, showing mostly bright with a very light speckling of grey patina and mostly a matte blue/grey patina on the refinished receiver/breech block/lockplate. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood has minimal handling marks overall and a hairline crack in the left flat. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is fine showing mostly a grey patina.
