Manufactured from 1879 to 1887, the Model 320 revolving rifle is one of the rarest Smith & Wesson firearms produced with a total production of 977. These firearms were serialized from 1 to 977 and out of the 977 manufactured, 224 had the 20 inch barrel. The Model 320 was manufactured in three barrel lengths of 16, 18, and 20 inches with twenty being the rarest length. In all, 840 of these firearms were sold in the U.S. and the remaining 137 were exported. Of the 137 that were exported only 65 were shipped to England like this example. The Model 320 was manufactured using the frame and basic action of the New Model No. 3 revolver with some minor differences in the hammer, trigger, and cylinder. A slot is cut into the butt and a hole drilled in the back strap to accommodate the shoulder stock. The rifle is chambered for the 320 Smith & Wesson cartridge. The 20 inch barrel has a globe front sight with cross hair aperture and two leaf folding rear sight. The top of the barrel rib is marked with the two line address/patent dates. Two British proofs are stamped on the left side of the barrel lug with these proofs alternating between the cylinder chambers. The matching serial number appears on the butt, cylinder, and barrel latch. Blue finish with casehardened trigger guard, straw colored trigger, and niter blue hammer with polished sides. The barrel is fitted with a checkered hard rubber red mottled forearm with the S&W monogram on the underside. The grips are matching with S&W monograms in a circle at the tops. The stock is smooth Circassian walnut with blue finished attaching iron, peep sight mounted on the tang, and a checkered hard rubber buttplate with S&W monogram. The included S&W factory letter confirms the barrel length, blue finish, and checkered red mottled forearm and grips. The rifle was shipped on November 10, 1881 to W.C. Scott & Son, Birmingham, England. According to the letter, "This shipment was for 6 of the revolving rifles and 6 set of globe and peep sights. The rifles were 3 with 20 inch barrels billed at $21.00 each, 3 with 16 inch barrels billed at $20.00 each and the sights were billed at $1.80 per set. These rifles were packed with a shipment of 50 revolvers."

Extremely fine. The revolving rifle retains 85% plus original high polished blue finish showing some flaking turned brown, some high edge wear and some thinning on the back strap. A couple of spots of cleaned pitting are present on the left side of the barrel. The forearm is excellent with a few minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. The grips are fine with a crack on the bottom of the right panel, otherwise a few minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. The stock is excellent with some minor handling marks. The stock attaching iron retains 70% original blue finish.
