Offered here is an exceptionally rare "long strap" caliber marked variation of the S&W New Model No. 3 Target series, the only known of its type manufactured in .38-40 as opposed to the standard .32/44 Gallery and .38/44 Gallery calibers. These long strap variations were later production revolvers with a longer top strap and cylinder. The cylinder was lengthened from 1 7/16 inches to 1 9/16 inches. Adding to its rarity is the blue finish which is far more rare than nickel plating for the New Model No. 3 series. Lyman bead front sight with U-notch rear sight. Matching serial numbers found on the butt, barrel, barrel latch and cylinder. The left side of the barrel has the rare late production caliber marking, and the rib has the one-line address. Consignor states information verbally received from historian Roy Jinks indicates this revolver shipped on October 25, 1902 as a single-gun special order item.

Very fine, retaining 90% original blue finish with between smooth brown and gray patinas. 90% original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger guard. The grips are fine with minor handling marks mostly near/on the bottom and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. No S&W collection can be considered complete without this revolver, the only known New Model No. 3 Target "Long Strap" Revolver in .38-40! A must have for the serious S&W collector!
