A) U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle with Bayonet

Description:

Manufactured c. 1874 with standard markings and features, "1873" dated lock plate and breech block, and faint cartouches on the stock. Collection marking in white under varnish on the bottom of the trigger guard. Includes a blued "US" marked socket bayonet with metal scabbard and "US" marked frog.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains 50% thinned arsenal refurbished blue and most of the dark oil quenched finishes with the balance a mottle grey-brown patina. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is very good with some scattered minor dings and scratches, a hairline crack near the lock plate screw, and faint cartouches. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet and scabbard are very fine retaining most of their finish and the fair frog is torn.

Manufactured c. 1882 with standard markings and features including 1881 or 1882 dated cartouche (last digit faint) and an arsenal rework star suffix on the serial number. Collection marking in white under varnish on the bottom of the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retains 50% arsenal refurbished blue finish and 85% strong original case colors on the breech block with the balance a grey-brown patina. The lightly sanded, reoiled wood is good with some scattered minor handling marks, chipping, a few hairline cracks, and a faint cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
