Manufactured in 1902, and chambered for the .44 Russian cartridge. The predecessor to the .44 Special round (essentially making it the .44 Magnum's "grandfather"), the 44 Russian commanded a reputation for power and accuracy, making it a desired round for large bore target shooters both in America and abroad. Elevation adjustable blade front sight and windage-adjustable notch rear sights, with the two-line address and patent dates on top of the barrel and "NEW SERVICE 44 RUSSIAN CTG." along the left. The side plate is marked "COLT'S/NEW SERVICE" around the Rampant Colt, with an "&" stamped on the inside of the frame. Fitted with a niter blue hammer and trigger and a pair of fine checkered grips.

Very fine, with 85% of the bright original high polish blue finish, showing some light scratches, a few areas of brown and gray patina, and minor edge wear overall. The grips are fine, with a small mended chip at the heel of the right panel, signs of new varnish, and a few light dings on the otherwise crisp checkering. An unidentified alteration has been made to the hammer, with a triangular cut visible on either side. The aging of the metal within the cuts suggests old work, likely period of use. The purpose of the modification is uncertain; it may have been an undone skeletonization, or a replacement with different composition to alter the weight of the hammer. Mechanically excellent.
