This early Model 1892 Krag rifle was arsenal converted to the Model 1896 configuration and has a pinned blade front sight, 1896 pattern rear sight, "SWP/1896" cartouche, circled script "P" proof behind the trigger guard, and an "1896" dated U.S. bayonet and blue sheath.

Fine overall as arsenal updated to Model 1896 specifications with 60% arsenal reblued finish on the barrel, some areas of brown/gray patina, 35% original nitre blue on the extractor, light scattered oxidation, and handling marks overall. The lightly sanded and re-oiled stock has shallow finger grooves, small dings throughout, and a legible cartouche.
