Description:

John Ford was active in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, until around 1852. He was the armorer at Harrisburg in 1818. The barrel has seven-groove rifling, traditional blade and notch sights, "J. FORD." stamped on top between the rear sight and breech, and some light meandering line engraving on the left at the breech. The "JOSH GOLCHER" marked lock has light floral and bird designs. The brass furniture mostly has some light engraving. The patch box lid has a scroll flourish, and the daisy head finial is also engraved. The maple stock is plainly finished and has attractive contrasting flame patterns and a shallow cheek rest.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with brown and gray patina, mild oxidation/pitting, some tool marks, mild edge wear, aged patina on the brass, general minor dings and scratches, some small chips and hairline cracks in the otherwise fine stock, and mild overall wear. Mechanically fine.
