Description:

This is a Springfield 1937 production M1903A1 National Match rifle fitted with U.S.M.C. Unertl 8X telescopic sight and mounts. The rifle has the standard Springfield Armory markings and serial number, "1498501" on the receiver and the barrel is marked: "SA/Ordnance Shell & Flame/3-37". The muzzle is stamped with the Ordnance star gauge mark and the barrel is stamped with the star-gauge number "2557" beneath the handguard. The rifle has a replacement parkerized bolt stamped "BF/38" on the top of the handle and early style safety with serif markings. The 'Style C' stock is a replacement with early, fine checkered, buttplate. The stock lacks a proof mark and Ordnance final inspection mark and is stamped "S/8 U" in the cut-off recess. The handguard is the correct WWII style used on U.S.M.C. sniper rifles and has the correct U.S.M.C. milling and front mount cut. The barrel has the correct fixture mark and the trigger guard has the modification found on genuine Marine sniper rifles. The bolt, barrel, receiver and other components appear to have been armory refinished and have the dark, black green, parkerized finish used by Springfield Armory prior to WWII. The telescopic sight is marked: "J. UNERTL/USMC-SNIPER/1328" with commercial blue finish. The scope has the correct blackened aluminum Unertl target mounts. Included with the rifle is the scarce, issue, micarta scope can for the telescopic sight.

Rating Definition:

Fine as upgraded to current configuration. This rifle appears to be a rebuilt M1903A1 NM rifle that has been fitted with an original U.S.M.C. Unertl 8X telescopic sight and correct mounts. The hand guard and other modifications are correct for a Marine Unertl sniper. The rifle lacks the distinctive Armory polished NM bolt with bright blue finish that is a key characteristic of original U.S.M.C. Unertl sniper rifles. This is a great looking example of a M1903A1 NM rifle with scarce Marine Unertl telescopic sight. The arsenal refurbished rifle is in very fine overall condition. The scope is in excellent original condition and retains at 95% of the original blue finish with clear optics. The black anodized aluminum scope mounts are both in excellent condition. The scope can is in excellent condition. This is a good looking, representative, assembled example of one of the most desirable WWII sniper rifles.
