Description:

Manufactured around 1800-1812 with three screw-off barrels (numbered "3," "4," and "5"), early Birmingham private proof and view marks on the bottom of the action at the breech, "ABINGDON" on the right and "WHITTERN" on the left accented by panoplies of arms, a vacant silver escutcheon on the top of the wrist, and sliding safety. The barrels fire individually by recocking the cock, closing the pan, and rotating the lever on the left side to reveal the priming charge for the second and third barrels. Whittern of Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England, was not located and may have been the retailer.

Rating Definition:

Fine with aged patina, dark brown patina and minor pitting on the iron, general marks and scratches, replaced lever, and mild overall wear. The grip is good and has smooth oiled finish, dark patina on the escutcheon, and minor edge wear. Mechanically fine.
