Description:

The Perry breech loaders were designed by Alonzo D. Perry who previously worked as a blacksmith in New York in the 1840s and also held other unrelated patents. The Perry Patent Arms Co. was formed in 1853 and failed around 1855. They manufactured a relatively small number of military carbines along with single shot pistols and custom ordered sporting rifles in varying calibers and configurations. All of their firearms are scarce, but this rifle is especially so as it is the only Perry double rifle we are aware of. Aside from having all the necessary additional components in order for it to be a configured as a double rifle, it also uses separate back action lock plates and has a long upper tang whereas the lock is part of the frame on other Perry firearms. It has a very interesting set of sights: three windage adjustable German silver blade front sights are fitted on a shared dovetailed base near the muzzle, and a central fixed notch rear sight and two screw adjustable notch rear sights are mounted to a shared dovetailed base in the rear section. This allows the shooter to either aim down the rib or each barrel and would also allow for adjusting the sights for varying situations. The top of the two-chamber breechblock is marked "PERRY PATENT ARM" at center. Aside from the barrels, most of the components feature extensive traditional scroll engraving along with track line borders and a dog scene on the right side of the frame. A "V" is marked on the bottom of the breechblock. Two cap magazines are inserted through the butt. The forearm is smooth and has a pewter tip and German silver key escutcheons. The buttstock has a checkered wrist.

Rating Definition:

Very good with crisp engraving, distinct markings, some thinned original brown finish mixed with dark brown patina on the barrels, lighter gray and brown patina on the other components, distinct but lightly smoothed checkering on the wrist, general minor scratches and dings throughout, and a small crack below the left lock on the refinished stock. Mechanically fine, including both magazines. This is an incredible find and is sure to be an excellent addition to any collection of antique American sporting arms.
